What are the next steps in an insurance claim repair?

At All American Restoration Services (AARES), we are a general contractor who specializes in helping homeowners throughout Pierce County with the insurance claim repairs process. We will assist you to compose an estimate that accurately reflects the unique nature of your project.

The Restoration Industry Association has created a document Tips for Homeowners (FAQs) which includes this reminder, “Only the owner of the property can authorize a company to perform work on that property. Your insurer does not have the right to directly contract for your repairs or insist that you employ a particular supplier or restoration firm.

  • Your insurance company may send out an adjuster, an independent adjuster (one who does not work directly for their company), and/or a preferred vendor. If this is the case we can assist to review their estimates and communicate any scope that we believe is not reflected in the effort to restore your home to “pre loss conditions”.

Insurance claim repairs inspection and estimate

Estimates from contractors are usually of two extremes:

  • Either they are ambiguous and contain as few scope details as possible

  • They overwhelm you with details so that the estimate is hard to follow

When you are working with insurance there are guidelines and norms that are unique to the claims process. The first step in the inspection and estimate process is to communicate the extent of the damages and the scope of work necessary to restore your Tacoma home to it's "pre loss conditions".

At AARES we take detailed measurements and documentation of the conditions in your home so that we can relay those items effectively to your insurance company as we create our estimate for the scope of work to be done.

We work with the insurance industries standardized estimating tool, Xactimate, so that we can communicate efficiently with your adjuster and assist you to get work started as quickly as possible.

We understand our responsibility is to attempt to present an estimate for the damages that we have observed at the site and communicate those using the industry standard estimating platform, supporting our scope with photos and notes (F9) so that we can restore the client to pre-loss conditions.

Your insurance company may send out:

  • An adjuster from your carrier, also know as a field adjuster - this is someone who works for your insurance company and specializes in assessing the extent of the damages and composing an estimate for repairs based upon the preferences of your carrier. Typically the adjuster has the authority to make decisions about policy interpretation, scope, and pricing.

  • An independent adjuster - this is a professional who is hired as a third party by your insurance company to assist them with composing and estimate for repairs based upon the preferences of your carrier. Typically the independent adjuster submits their estimate to an adjuster or claims representative at your insurance company for review and final confirmation.

  • Similar to an independent adjuster, you carrier may recommend a contractor that is a "preferred vendor." These contractors may handle a certain volume of work with your insurance company and are familiar with the preferences of your carrier.

As an insured, you typically have the right to select the contractor who will be working in your home. If the carrier sends out one of the parties above, their estimate may be referenced as the baseline for any comparative estimates that you acquire.

Insurance claim repairs estimate review and approval:

Depending on the complexity of your project, our goal at AARES is to have the estimate to your carrier within 5 business days of our inspection. Typically it will take your insurance company the same amount of time to review our estimate and get back to us with any clarifying questions about the scope of work. We like to be transparent and you will be included in communication between AARES and the insurance company.

If the adjuster has any questions or concerns,  we ask that you request them to communicate to us which line items and/or scope that do not appear to be supported by the policy language or details provided in our estimate and we will attempt to respond within 48 hours.

Once insurance approves an estimate they will typically issue payment to you. If the amount is greater than $20,000 they may include the mortgage company on the check.

At AARES we request a deposit and a signed contract prior to starting work. If you want to expedite repairs we can contract with you directly prior to insurance approval.

Insurance claim repairs scheduling

Every Tacoma insurance claim repairs project is unique so the schedule will be built around those items which have to be ordered. Often these items include cabinets, flooring, or specialty fixtures. We will work with you to start on those items such as structural repairs and drywall that will give you some sense of “normalcy” as soon as possible.

A few items you can do to help expedite the insurance claim repairs process:

  • 48 hours after we send you an email and/or text that the estimate has been sent to your adjuster, you will want to call them to ensure receipt and request an update on the review process.

  • If there are items such as flooring, tile, or other specialty items that may need to be ordered, we can refer you to our vendors with whom we have good relationships so that you can begin to make some of these material selections.

We look forward to assisting all parities with returning this structure to pre-loss conditions. Please email/call if there are any questions.

If you want to learn more about our company please check out the AARES website. We pride ourselves in clarity, communication, and quality throughout the restoration process.
